Hurricane Preparedness: Registration Open for NHC Alerting System

This is the time of year when our area gets those annoying thunderstorm lines.

While the National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina, is keeping an eye out for any potential severe storm development during the day, now is a wonderful opportunity for you to check your kits and consider your safe havens at home and at work.

Officials with New Hanover County Emergency Management are urging all citizens to sign up for a new emergency alert system as the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1.

Register for NHC Emergency Alert

Residents can text READYNHC to 24639 to register for crucial and timely warnings. On their mobile devices, users of this service will be able to access vital information such as updates on severe weather, dangerous situations, and other potential safety alerts.

You can now receive alerts in Spanish by texting LISTONHC to 24639. The launch takes place from May 5–11 as part of National Hurricane Preparedness Week.

The service provides critical information on severe weather, hazardous conditions, and safety alerts. Spanish language alerts are also available. The rollout is part of National Hurricane Preparedness Week from May 5-11. Residents with disabilities that make evacuation difficult should enroll in the Access and Functional Needs Registry.
