The Special Olympics New Hanover County Special Games kicks off at Ashley High School
The Special Olympics New Hanover County Spring Games began at Ashley High School, featuring over 200 adults and 250 volunteers. Events included the 100-meter run, softball toss, and relay toss. These games are the premier event for athletes to display their skills in a competitive setting. The games will continue with over 350 New Hanover County students expected to participate.

NHC Fire Rescue Captain Courtney Scott Padgett passes away
New Hanover County Fire Rescue Captain Courtney Scott Padgett passed away at the age of 45. He was a dedicated member of the Castle Hayne Volunteer Fire Department and later became a respected Captain with New Hanover County Fire Rescue. Padgett was honored for his unwavering commitment to serving his community and protecting others. His funeral will be held at Northside Church on April 29 at 11 a.m. Padgett will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the fire service community.

Hundreds attend candlelight prayer service for cancer patient Isabella Strahan
Isabella Strahan, daughter of former NFL star Michael Strahan, is facing a difficult cancer journey due to the support of family, friends, and community members. She has been diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a type of brain cancer, in October. Isabella has undergone three brain surgeries and two rounds of radiation.
A candlelight vigil was held in Wilmington to pray for quick healing, and her mother, Jean Strahan, hopes to raise awareness about the disease. She also highlights the importance of support and help for those struggling with a cancer diagnosis. Isabella has been open about her cancer journey on social media and is currently receiving three blood transfusions.

Navassa man charged in Wilmington shooting
A man, 21-year-old JyQuail McAllister, is facing charges after a shooting in Wilmington, inflicting serious injury on a man. McAllister is charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury, Discharging Firearm in City Limits, Possession of Marijuana, and Failure to Appear.

Red Cross needs volunteers to help install free smoke alarms in Cape Fear area
The Cape Fear area chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting a blood drive and a free smoke alarm installation event in Brunswick County. The event, called Sound the Alarm for Home Fire Safety, aims to save lives by installing free smoke alarms in homes without them and educating people about home fire safety.
The Red Cross has installed over 2.8 million free smoke alarms nationwide, saving 2,102 people, including 665 children, and 68 people in North Carolina. Volunteers can join the event at the Supply Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday.

Hampstead man convicted for firearm offenses, falsifying past record
A convicted felon, 51-year-old Michael Vaughn, was found guilty of firearm offenses after a jury trial in New Hanover County Superior Court. Vaughn attempted to purchase a shotgun and falsified a firearms transaction form to conceal past felony convictions. He was sentenced to 8 months minimum and 19 months maximum in North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections, followed by 3 years of supervised probation.
