Leland’s history dates back to the mid-1890s when it was a small settlement at the crossroads of Village Road and the Wilmington, Columbia, and Augusta Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1989, with the former McFarland Home becoming the first Town Hall.
The name “Leland” was chosen for the town’s post office in 1898, honoring Joseph W. Gay’s nephew, Leland Adams.
Leland’s proximity to the Brunswick River made it an early transportation center, with ferries and bridges connecting travelers going north and south. The town’s growth continued, with State Road 20 hard-surfaced by 1923, becoming a significant route for travelers.
